Eskom's board still backs CEO André de Ruyter, despite Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe expressing a lack of confidence in his ability to fix the power utility over a mismatch of skills.

In an interview with the Mail & Guardian, Mantashe said that Eskom needs a "fixer" with "technical skills". He described De Ruyter as an "alpha" who would join an institution after the fixer had done their work. He also took aim at Eskom's board and its apparent lack of skills.

Eskom's board, however, is standing by De Ruyter. "The board has complete and full confidence in what De Ruyter is doing and what he has done," said its chairperson, Professor Malegapuru Makgoba.
