Purported plans by the Indian government to force power plants to maximise output amid an anticipated electricity crunch spells good news for South African coal miners.
Reuters on Monday reported that the Indian government plans to use an emergency law next month to force power plants that run on imported coal to maximise output in preparation for expected record consumption this summer.
The government previously invoked this emergency clause, as provided for by the nation's Electricity Act, in May last year, when power plants with a combined capacity of about 17GW halted operations in response to record high coal prices.
