Stage 2 load shedding will resume at 09:00 on Saturday morning and continue until 22:00, Eskom has said, as cold weather boosts demand for electricity.

The power utility had managed to avoid nationwide load shedding during the lockdown, but power cuts recommenced on Friday after a number of generating units tripped and a cold front caused temperatures to drop.

Parts of Gauteng, meanwhile, have faced bouts of localised rolling blackouts during lockdown known as "load rotation", which Eskom has attributed to a prevalence of vandalism and illegal connections.
