The public can comment on proposals to end harmful practices associated with the captive lion industry and other measures to protect South Africa's biodiversity - all living things.

Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment Barbara Creecy on Friday issued the draft White Paper on the Conservation and Sustainable Use of South Africa's Biodiversity. Conservation concerns the protection of the environment for current and future generations. Sustainable use refers to actions that do not lead to the long-term decline of the wild nor are disruptive to ecosystems, and encourages humane treatment of animals.

The public has less than 60 days to comment on the proposals.
