Green groups pin hope on stopping powerships by getting environmental authorisation pulled

Green groups have objected to proposals by a Turkish energy company to provide electricity to South Africa for 20 years via floating powerships moored at three ports, saying the scheme is both expensive and bad for the environment.

Karpowership, a subsidiary of Turkey's Karadeniz Energy Group, operates the world's largest fleet of self-contained floating powerships.

In mid-March, it was named a preferred bidder in SA's "Risk Mitigation IPP Procurement Programme" to fast-track new power production. It has said its ships are "immediately available for deployment in South Africa".
