The mismanagement, underinvestment and lack of leadership that have plagued South Africa’s municipalities for years show no signs of improving, Auditor-General (AG) Tsakani Maluleke said on Tuesday.
Maluleke’s latest report on the financial and audit outcomes of SA’s 257 municipalities again made for grim reading.
The financial position of just under a third of the country’s municipalities is so dire that the AG doubts whether they will be able to continue operating in the near future.
