Car manufacturers are bullish about the prospects for electric vehicles hitting South Africa's roads, and not even load shedding will curb their enthusiasm.

The biggest hurdle, however, will be to stimulate consumer demand, according to Naamsa CEO Mikel Mabasa. Consumers have been used to the internal combustion engine – powered by petrol or diesel – for more than 100 years, he explained.

"This is new to the South African economy … as drivers have never experienced electric vehicles before," he said. Electric vehicles must follow the same path as mobile phones to become normalised in the South African market. Auto manufacturers need to start bringing these products to market for consumers to learn about the new technology and even get to "touch and feel" these products, said Mabasa.
