South Africa needs to demonstrate its ability to use $8.5 billion in energy transition funds quickly and wisely if it hopes to secure the greater financing required to sustainably and justly move away from fossil fuels, said minister of forestry, fisheries and environmental affairs, Barbara Creecy.

Finance is among the most hotly contested energy transition issues as developing countries - that have played a relatively minor role in creating the climate crisis - seek international support for both mitigation and adaptation efforts.
