Renowned French author and economist Thomas Piketty said South Africa's drastic levels of inequality warranted serious consideration of innovative interventions, whether the government plans to introduce a basic income grant or not.
On Monday night, Piketty addressed a virtual panel organised by the University of Witwatersrand School of Economics and Finance, in celebration of a century of teaching economics at the university.
The event comes after the release of Piketty's latest book, titled A Brief History of Equality. His previous books, including Capital and Ideology in 2020, as well as Capital in the Twenty-first Century and The Economics of Inequality in 2017, have been acclaimed worldwide for their examination of wealth concentration and inequality.
