"It was as if he were not allowed to talk."

This is how Nick Bester, a former top official at Canadian-headquartered engineering and project management company Hatch, described a "bizarre" meeting with Anoj Singh, then the chief financial officer of Transnet. The meeting took place at Melrose Arch in early 2014.

The reason was that Salim Essa, a Gupta associate, was holding court at the table and Singh, according to Bester, was very much in his shadow.
