The Covid-19 crisis has allowed countries an opportunity to reset their future trajectories. Domestically, President Cyril Ramaphosa has spoken of achieving a more inclusive economy and a more equitable society. 

But South Africa's history – the trauma of apartheid which locked out most citizens from the economy, and the state capture project, which hollowed out state institutions and public funds, have left us on a poorer footing.
