South African Revenue Service Customs officers have seized goods weighing some 132kg in a R40 million drug bust at OR Tambo airport.

Officers found substances used to make tik – or crystal methamphetamine, SARS said.

The revenue service, which has been cracking down on illicit trade, said this was the second major drug bust it had made at the same airport recently. Customs officials previously seized over 1 700kg of mandrax valued at R105 million, which was incoming from Kenya.

In a statement on Monday, SARS said a driver had been spotted acting suspiciously while loading goods from two boxes into his vehicle. After a drug testing kit was used on the contents, which tested positive for crystal meth, the Hawks were alerted to come and re-test.

The Hawks' test was positive, SARS said. Both the importer and driver were arrested and a criminal case was registered with the SA Police service.
