Previous estimates of the cost of state capture are likely the tip of the iceberg, President Cyril Ramaphosa told the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture on Thursday.
After two days of giving evidence, the president gave a closing statement on Thursday afternoon, stressing the importance of the committee in finding closure after years of state capture.
Ramaphosa has previously told investors that the cost to the economy caused by state capture could be as high as R500 billion, while other estimates have been as high as R1 trillion. Shadow World Investigations researcher Paul Holden, meanwhile, has placed the direct cost of state contracts channelled to Gupta-linked entities at an estimated R57 billion.
