Blank check

After weeks of being bombarded with tons of advertisements about FNB’s Gold Cheque Account, I figured maybe it could be worth checking out. So I called its contact centre to find out more about this product because – with all the excitement the ads generate – I thought it might have substance. After all, FNB’s pick up line is: “Can your gold cheque account do that?”

The general enquiries line doesn’t have complicated long options and on the other end a friendly agent – Edith – picked up in less than 10 seconds. But then she just couldn’t sell the account to me. I wanted to know why I should choose this specific account instead of any other financial service provider’s and… blank, she choked. She asked me to hold – for more than two minutes – and came back with what sounded like a list of info about the account (which I’d seen on its website) and read it to me unconvincingly.

What basically separates the account from others on the market is its three pricing option plans, ranging from R25,50 to unlimited transactions it charges you per month. Every time you swipe your card you earn eBucks.

The account has really nice perks. However, a little more effort when pitching it would go a long way.
