Unless you have been living in North Korea, you are likely to have heard about the wildly successful Netflix show from south of the border called Squid Game.

Without spoiling too much of it, one of the key themes of the South Korean show is an examination of the lengths people go through when unbearable debt hangs over their heads like the metaphorical sword of Damocles.

Desperate people do desperate things – anything that can ease their burdens. They are right type of people to lure into signing up to something, and instead of getting money, end up losing more of it.

In this week's episode of Fin24's SA Money Report, we explore the dark, twisted form of marketing and web design that a class action lawsuit claims has ensnared a host of South Africans - some desperate, some just average, everyday people who needed a few extra bucks.

Helping us to unpack the case is our show’s regular, Fin24 investigative reporter Jan Cronje.

Fin24's aim with this weekly series is to take complex issues and break them down in a way that gives listeners an insight into a world that can often be impenetrable, either because of really dense figures, ratios and percentages - or because you need to navigate obscure financial terminology.

New episodes of the show, hosted by Fin24 deputy editor Ahmed Areff, will be released every Friday.
