Halala to Mpho Makwana for stepping up to take the difficult job of Eskom chairperson! We should thank him in advance because there is no guarantee that he will be thanked when he completes his service.

The more of a public face he shows on behalf of Eskom, the more likely the public is to hate him. This, I'm sure he knows. He is also probably aware that some of the risks faced by management – death threats, spying, threats to your family – may also come his way. Not to mention a vast number of board meetings – a number way beyond the call of duty – in the evenings, weekends or any other time they are needed. Over the past year, the board held something like 36 meetings, for which, by the way, they were not remunerated, as the board was paid monthly and not per meeting.

It is a shame that the period of the remaining six directors on the previous board ended so negatively.
