The National Union of Metalworkers of SA will soon kick off its 11th national congress. Whatever happens over the coming week, the repercussions will be felt well beyond the labour movement, writes Terry Bell

One of the most tumultuous periods in modern South African trade union history may be triggered on Monday: it could signal the fragmentation of the country's largest trade union or the beginning of a drive towards greater transparency, accountability and democratic control within the labour movement.

Alternatively, and after some additional acrimony, more accusations, threats of court action and perhaps some walkouts, nothing much will superficially change, leaving the labour movement weaker than before.
