Non-resident investors held 8.6% of South African government bonds in 2006 and increased their holdings to a peak of 42.8% in March 2018. Since then, their holdings have declined to 29.2% as at the end of September 2020 due to a combination of factors, including the loss of investment grade on the back of deteriorating fiscus.
