Educational outcomes are an important determinant of skills formation in any economy, and skills are in turn one of the key ingredients for economic growth, says Jabulani Sikhakhane.

The kind of a social safety net that Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will announce in February next year will be a good signal of whose political and economic word carries more weight in South Africa.

Godongwana said in Parliament, when tabling the Medium-term Budget Policy Statement earlier this month, that there were "ongoing discussions about the social safety net". The details of the proposed interventions would be announced in February when he tables the 2022/23 Budget in Parliament, he said.
