The public broadcaster is one of a few entities that are likely giving the Minister of Communications sleepless nights. But what cripples the SABC’s ability to make a leap is the poor funding model it maintains, says Khaya Sithole.

When Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams rose to the post of Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies in the aftermath of the 2019 general election, very few would have begrudged her appointment. After all, in a cabinet resembling a gerontocracy rather than a meritocracy, her youthful exuberance was a welcome antidote. The portfolio itself is a motely crew of the complex and the stagnant.
