The reasons for wanting to implement green taxes, such as carbon tax and health promotional levy, might be sound - but the adjustment costs of these taxes when the economy is at its weakest point might be too high for economic actors that are battling with Covid-19 effects.

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) has consistently warned that a "no-action" scenario against changing climate will be detrimental to the current and future generations in the world.

South Africa is ranked among the top 15 emitters of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) per capita in the world, making it the most polluted non-oil producing nation.
