The labour context in the South Africa economy was a bleak one pre-Covid-19 and is getting worse as the economy continues to digest the impact of the pandemic on the viability and sustainability of businesses.

In the first quarter of 2020, the economy shed 334 000 jobs compared to the previous quarter, and shed 869 000 jobs compared to the same quarter a year ago.

And as employment outcomes continue to worsen, the labour seeking activity follows suit, with the number of discouraged labour seekers continuing to rise with each passing quarter.
