Over the coming 12 to 15 months, South Africans will see a growing number of individuals of all kinds - the good, the bad, and the ugly - stepping forward to announce themselves as presidential wannabes. They will offer all sorts of solutions, from totally unrealistic to probably doable, to help South Africa recover and stand on its feet again following almost two decades of wanton destruction by the ANC.

Some will mean well, driven by honourable intentions. Others will simply add to a growing list of opportunists believing that those who came before them have eaten enough - why not them? Another group will consist of well-funded fronts for all sorts of nefarious agendas by faceless groupings in current politics and outside politics, to stage new versions of state capture, middlemen and women taking instructions from faceless masters with, seemingly, bottomless resources needing to be legitimised through political laundering.

The era of "independent" candidates will be exciting, no doubt, but also replete with all sorts of dangers for South Africa, a country that has been turned into fertile ground for political entrepreneurs and adventurists on a feeding frenzy that has literally brought it to its knees.
