The governing party's top six have a great deal of influence, which means when the ANC sneezes, South Africa is sure to catch a cold. Experience to date has shown that the ANC sneezes quite a lot and South Africa is often left to deal with the consequences, writes Solly Moeng.
By this time next month, in December 2022, members of the perennially misgoverning African National Congress (ANC) would have elected a new set of party leaders for the next five years. These will consist of the so-called ‘Top Six’ (including President and Deputy President, National Chairperson, General-Secretary and Deputy, as well as Treasurer). They will all form part of the party’s next National Executive Committee (NEC), its highest leadership structure. In it will be found individuals of all types and, at least for some, with all forms of dark clouds still hanging over their heads.
