Eskom is collapsing and renewables are not coming onto the grid fast enough. That South Africa has not seen a massive national shutdown by aggrieved citizens in the face of ongoing energy supply woes is a miracle, says Thabi Leoka.

The South African economy will not reach sustainable long-term growth without stable and reliable electricity supply. Even if we adopt some reforms, economic growth will remain elusive.

Every company, factory and household require stable and reliable electricity supply to function optimally. The power outages that we are currently experiencing are setting the country back. South Africa, like the rest of the world, is emerging from the pandemic, which tanked the economy and revealed its weaknesses. We are supposed to be in recovery and adjustment mode, but instead, the rolling blackouts are deducting from growth. A slowdown in recovery means that companies will be unable to employ more workers, and some may have to shrink their workforce.
