Cape Town - A recent savings experiment by First National Bank came with a strong message: It's time to give up those guilty pleasures and save for more important things.

The experiment occurred when unsuspecting shoppers keen to indulge in their usual guilty pleasures were caught off guard by a cashier, who seemed more like a financial adviser.

"A healthy savings culture will benefit South Africans on an individual and national level," FNB explained.

"According to our research, three in 10 South Africans say that they cannot afford to save."
