Johannesburg - Vodacom will give 500MB free data to each of its approximately 200 000 customers who were hit by a double debit order glitch last week.

On New Year’s Day, Vodacom told customers that it would reimburse them after the glitch occurred.

Vodacom’s executive head of corporate affairs Tshepo Ramodibe told Fin24 on Wednesday that all reimbursement payments have been made by the end of Tuesday and that the additional data giveaway is to say sorry to customers.

The free 500MB data bundles, though, expire after seven days, Ramodibe said.

“This is a token gesture to say guys, we’re sorry and this is an apology on our part,” said Ramodibe.

Vodacom has further promised to reimburse any bank charges that may have been set off by the accidental double debits.

Ramodibe urged Vodacom customers to be patient with being reimbursed with these bank charges as the mobile network is still finalising these repayments with the banks.

“We are asking for a bit more patience on this one because it takes a bit more time,” Ramodibe said.

Vodacom is South Africa’s biggest mobile network with over 30 million subscribers.
