Isolate to elevate

During these uncertain times, Old Mutual asked local influencers to answer one simple question: What is your Most Treasured Moment during lockdown? Whatever your tomorrow brings, it’s the things that matter most that we need to protect.

By Estelle Tjipuka, business coach and motivational speaker.

Interestingly and in a blink of an eye, the world changed rapidly. Covid-19 not only came with health risks but impacted our social and economic lifestyles, as well as our physical and psychological wellbeing, just to mention a few. The pandemic came to disrupt our norm and in a blink of an eye, it was no longer ‘business as usual’, but rather ‘business unusual’.

The national lockdown and isolation from society was a shock to almost everybody. Schools have been closed and for some children, sadly, this became an unending national holiday. Parents became teachers and took up the responsibilities of home-schooling, which confused the children even more, not knowing whether we were teachers or parents or teacher-parents. Businesses had to close down, downsize or retrench and consequently, the economy slowed down, exposing the extent of unemployment, inequality and social differences. An unplanned situation that we found ourselves in, yet rather unexpected and unprecedented.

Even though it seems that the pandemic turned the world ‘upside-down’, personally for me, it turned the world ‘right-side-up’. The pandemic not only came to disrupt my norm and way of doing things, but it also came to re-arrange, re-prioritize, restructure and re-align my personal life. The rat race came to a PAUSE and it was time for more reflection, introspect and re-alignment.

  • I became more intentional about God.
  • I became more intentional about creativity.
  • I became more intentional about family time.
  • I became more intentional about relationships.
  • I became more intentional about a balanced lifestyle.
  • I became more intentional about my time and how I spend it.
  • I became more intentional and compassionate about vulnerable people.

For the first time in a very long time, I had downtime to my disposal where I could just sit, read, cook, plan and reflect on life without thinking or worrying about the next deadline and/or my ‘To-do’ list. For the first time in a long time, I listened attentively to my family and friends; not just hearing what they had to say. I have been transformed, inside out and a new version of me emerged.

Amid the chaos in the world, my priorities have been re-arranged and turned the ‘right-side-up’. I have isolated to elevate to a new level of self-awareness, self-discovery and self-regulation. I have isolated to elevate to a whole new dimension in my life.  These were my most treasured moments during the lockdown.

This experience taught me that at times, we need to isolate ourselves to find ourselves. At times, we need to isolate ourselves to reposition ourselves. And finally, at times we need to isolate ourselves to elevate ourselves.
