The amazing health benefits of eating oats

Nothing says “good morning” like a warm bowl of oats. Whether slowly cooked till creamy or blended with fresh fruit in a smoothie, oats provides your body with many benefits. If you’re not eating oats for breakfast, you’re missing out on a delicious way to add fibre and nutrients to your body first thing in the morning.

Jungle Oats, Jungle Oats instant and Jungle Oats Large Tiger Oats flake, contain iron, dietary fibre and Vitamin B1 (Thiamine); which contributes to a number of benefits in the body. Stella Papadopoulos-Fenster, Jungle’s Nutritionist Consultant with over two decades of experience elaborates on some of these benefits.

Oats and the lowering of cholesterol

Oats contains soluble fibre, also found in apples, pears, prunes and barley. “Jungle Oats, like other oats, contains beta-glucan, a fibre that has been known to assist in reducing the ‘bad’ blood cholesterol levels,” says Papadopoulos-Fenster. Soluble fiber from foods, such as Oats as part of a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, may reduce the risk of heart disease. A serving of Jungle Oats supplies 1, 5 grams of the soluble fibre necessary per day to have this effect.

Oats has been known to stabilise blood sugar and provide sustained energy

The beta-glucan in oats has been seen to reduce the postprandial (after eating a meal) glycaemic response. This assists in providing sustained energy for the body to function. It has been suggested that foods yielding low postprandial glycaemic responses may be beneficial for the dietary prevention of type 2 diabetes. “A high fibre diet will stabilise blood sugar levels and will avoid the mid-morning slumps, which come from eating a lot of sugar and carbohydrates early in the day,” adds Papadopoulos-Fenster. To up the ante, add milk to the oatmeal.

Oats is low in Salt/sodium

Too much sodium in the diet may also have other harmful health effects, including increased risk of blood pressure and heart disease. Diets low in sodium may reduce the risk of high blood pressure, a disease associated with many factors.

By starting your day with a bowl of South Africa’s best loved oats, it gives you the energy that you need to sustain a busy life.

“A good source of nutrition and nourishment plays a vital function in supplying the human body with the required nutrients to maintain one’s health. Everyone needs to ensure that they adhere to a balanced diet for their own benefit,” concludes Papadopoulos-Fenster.
