ADD and sleep patterns

I have a son of nine years old that was diagnosed with ADD at age six. For as long as I can remember my son has a restlessness even in his sleep. He constantly has nightmares even though I keep him from matching any TV programmes that might contribute to this. I feel so sorry for my child as the nightmares really upsets him. He will jump up from bed and hit his head in order to rid himself of the images. Any advise will be appreciated.

Dear Yolanda,
Although it is common for children with ADD to have restless sleep patterns, nightmares as strong as your sons are not typical. Is he on medication? Speak to his peadiatrician/doctor about these nightmares; if they disrupt his sleep often enough he will be tired which will make his ADD symptoms appear worse.
