depressed child?
my daughter is 6 now and has just moved to grade R. the teacher called me aside saying that she is not coping very well. She showed me her work. teacher says that she gets easily destracted hands in half work, can not draw a man in proportion. My daughter does some times colour out the lines. She cant draw a man and does not colour the picture but half colours with white inbetween. Teacher has stopped trying to correct work and throws it away if not right. My daughter has been so heartsore in tears about this. She feels like she cant do anything right. I am devestated. What can i do to help her. Should i get her to an occupational theoripist? I got a whole lot of books with Grade R and to tell you the truth i cant even draw a man in proportion. My daughter can build a 100 piece puzzel though

Dear Debbie,

An occupational therapist (OT) can certainly assist the development of fine motor skills which it appears are the teacher's main area of concern. It may be worth having a meeting with the teacher and OT together; this shows the school you are pro actively addressing areas of concern and allows the teacher and OT to discuss and work toward the same goals. If after three months the teacher sees no improvement and/or you are still concerned about your daughter's emotional well being, an appointment with an educational psychologist may be in order.

It is important to initially try one therapy at a time to prevent your daughter thinking there is something wrong with her. Just as important is exposing her to the same expectations at home and school (and therapy) to build better confidence.

Best wishes,
