Dear Fish,

You must first be sure of the accuracy of the machine at the gym – is it correctly calibrated? is the size of the cuff used around your arm the right size for you? is your BP measured before or after exercise, and if after, how long after? What exactly was the reading? Who made the “diagnosis” of high blood pressure? All these factors will influence how to assess the “diagnosis” of hypertension.

As you are already on a beta blocker, your BP should be low-normal. If, despite that, you truly are hypertensive, then you need to have your entire treatment regime re-assessed by a specialist physician. This then becomes something more than the average GP can handle, as you may need a different medication for your high BP, but will still need to carry on with the beta blockers. This combination can get very complex, and you may have unpleasant side effects. There is a connection between Graves disease and cardiovascular problems, but they are usually related to a fast and/or irregular pulse.

However, you would be best off seeing a specialist, as your situation is rather unusual. Whilst the gyms render a service in getting and keeping people aware of the need for exercise, they are not staffed by medical practitioners, and we have encountered often serious problems when gym members are “diagnosed” as either fit or ill.

Please arrange to see a specialist to get this matter sorted out. Good luck.
