It is important to drink sufficient water during the day to prevent the bowel contents from dehydrating in the lower colon. This makes the stool difficult to move and impaction becomes more of a risk. Also ensure that you use a soluble soft fibre supplement that absorbs water, do not use insoluble fibre such as digestive bran as this will not absorb water and will dry out easier, rather use oat bran and pectin fibre based products. Taking one to two tablespoons of flaxseed oil daily will also assist in keeping the bowel mucous membranes healthy and less likely to dehydrate the stool. Lastly do daily breathing exercises using the diaphragm - good deep breathing into the abdomen, this relaxes the intestines and promotes peristalsis the muscle action required to move the stool along and out the body.
These are the important factors to prevent constipation - water, soluble fibre, essential fatty acids, good peristalsis of the intestines.,
