Croup in older child
I want to post this on paed board, but unsure at to why there is no option to post???

I took my son who is 8 to emergency during the night as he could not breathe due to croup. He has had this before so we keep humidifier going in his room when he is not well. This time was more serious, he was nebulized and given adrenelain and prelone. The attending doctor said that is it very rare for an 8 year old to still be having croup. He then disappeared and we never saw him again, but I had so many questions! The nurse just said that he should see a pead about it. I am concerned now - is there a chance that something else is underlying here - I thought that kids got croup whilst kids, not just up till age 5??

Dear Mom

We do see Croup more in younger kids. Croup is just a name for a group of symptoms caused by swelling of the airways and in young kids are often caused by viral infections. Older children may have a genetically narrowed airway making them prone to croup symptoms later than average. You could ask your doctor to take an x/ray to see if your son's airway is narrower than normal. see

I think there is a problem with the page at pediatricians forum. I'll let them know!
