Hiatus Hernia
Hi Doc,
My hubby has a hiatus hernia and is considering having an operation.
Can you please explain what the operation entails?
His belly is very round and hard could this be from the hernia?
What can he do to prepare for the operation?

Thank-you very much!

Hallo Pixi
See these pictures: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/ency/presentations/100028_1.htm
They basically pull back the area of stomach that herniated ( pushed upwards through) the diaphragm and then fasten it so that it can't do this again. The hernia would not cause a swollen hard belly.
He should avoid any medication that can cause bleeding like Disprin and herbal medications for at least a week before the operation and should also avoid alcohol for a week before the operation.
