Lip problem
Maybe i should start by telling you that i have a neurological condition similar to MS, CIDP, it is the relapsing type. I have had it 4 7 years on and off mostly off though. I am 5 months pregnant and at my 3 rd month had a relapse where i developed numbness in the foot causing drop foot, the disease process has stopped luckily and i have seen a slight improvement and no deterioration, with only an ankle guard for support, the usual prednisone is not advised so i have to wait it out until after pregnancy. I have over the past few days similar to your other patient on this site developed a numb lip - only the left (the drop foot is also the left one) top half of lip not on the right side of my top lip just the left, its very very specific to this left side of my top lip, feels like i have dental work done.

It is not affecting my smiling, chewing, talking, at all its purely senstational at this stage, almost like something stung me, but there is no obvious bite/swollen or anything to indicate that.

Given the history i still dont think its related to my condition which relapses with episodes of numbness, simply because it happened 2 years ago also small patches of my face near the eyebrow and my neurologist did a thorough exam and said it did not warrant prednisone as it was purely sensational, no nerve involvement. It went away after about 2 months on its own. My theory is that this is some type of allergy because it happened 2 yrs ago also in Oct, and i am allergy prone specifically airborne allergies, esp in Oct/September.

If it is not an allergy which i guess i will never know i was wondering if you could tell me if it could be coming from a pinched nerve in my back/neck, is it possible that just part of my lip and such a small area would then be numb? i still believe most of my problems could be coming from something that simple, neurolgist dismisses it, i obviously cannot go and have an xray as i am pregnant, but it there any slight possibilty that a pinched nerve can do this???? if so then i will investigate that route after the baby.... just to rule it out as it keeps bugging me.

Lastly i might just mention that also on the left side of my hand on my middle finger i have a ganglion right at the base where the finger joins the palm, it does not give me any problems but wondered whether it could push on a nerve that somehow is now referring the numbness to my lip on the left side?

I have also put on a lot of weight and have terrible lower back pain due to this.

Dear Miki
No the numbness will not be due to a nerve pinching in your back or due to the hand's ganglion. It may just be a superficial nerve of the face causing the symptoms and could be from an allergy. The trigeminal facial nerve's branch that runs from the bottom of the eye socket provides sensation to the upper lip - have you perhaps hurt that part of your face?
