Ringing in the ears-Tinnutis?

Dear Doctor.My 20yr old son who is a smoker ,who is normally very healty from time to time has sinusitus but not at the moment,and has been complaining of ringing,buzzing in the ears and has come to a point where it is driving him crazy he says.He struggling to sleep.
What can be causing this and what can I give him to help take it away.Are the tubes blocked or is there a problem with say "water"in the ear?How can I help him?
