How can I break my mental blocks down?
Hi Doc,

Ive always been a bit of a comedian, I love making ppl laugh, and enjoy talking to ppl in general. I do however find it very difficult to communicate at work though, and has become more difficult in the last year dealing with a very loud obnoxious boss. No one seems to get a word in edge-ways.
So i generally keep quiet. Now being recently happily married to my loving and stunning wife, and not socialising as much as i used to i find this anxious feeling welling up even when im in more relaxed social environments. I play squash, and find it difficult to chat to new people in groups in a loud environment. Im becoming more and more soft spoken, and I cant seem to break this visious circle. Just to say a comment or ask a question takes me ages before i can actually open my mouth and hear the words come out. I feel like im having these fits of stage fright. I used to enjoy meeting new people, and chatting to strangers, but can only do that now when ive had a drink or two, otherwise i struggle to find things to say. What the hell is going on with me?

Doesn't sound like anything awful or unusual --- sounds like a touch of Social Phobia / Social Anxiety Disorder. This can be helped by some antidepressant drugs which reduce the anxiety in such specific social situations, and also by some psychological treatments which concentrate on revising the negative thought patterns that usually come to be associated with such a problem, and on learning ways to relax oneself and regain confidence.
