Is this Bipolar?
Dear CS,

I have been suffering from depression since my teens (I'm now 32). Normally it would go away eventually and my mood would get better. Recently it has started getting increasingly worse with a terrible job situation I was stuck in, and now it starts getting more of a physical than only an emotional thing. I actually feel like if I close my eyes I'm going to fall asleep, I just can't handle being awake anymore. My head feels fuzzy and I can't even remember the simplest thing. I feel absolutely incapable of doing my job, my muscles are weak and I feel like I am a million miles away. My hearing is also getting worse - don't know if that's related. Anyway, inbetween really bad bouts, I have now started experiencing extremely upbeat periods that last for about a week to two weeks. I am not manic, but I experience everything in absolute clarity and I am extremely positive and energetic and confident. I see things differently than usual, feel like I can do absolutely anything (more so than just normal good mood). Then from one day to the next I go downhill again. My work is lagging behind and I'm worried because I can't seem to 'will' myself out of this frame of mind.

Please help.

Its hard to tell, Kato, and your best bet would be to see a good local shrink for a poper in-depth assessment. What you describe sounds mainly like recurrent Depressive episodes, and sometimes the sheer pleasure of finding yourself NOT depressed, can feel a bit manic. Bipolar disorder produces mood shifts up and down, but over days, usually weeks even months, rather than day to day.
