Mother(77) abused?
I stay in Gauteng. My folks and siblings(4) in Cape Town. Previuosly(2yrs ago) I was ordered to fly down to see my father on his last days. To my surprise, my mother was the one needing the attention (went down from 80kg to 47kg in 1 year). "Nobody" realised that! All of a sudden she got their attention for about 2 months. Recently I was ordered down again. My mother had "a few light strokes, suffers from alzheimers, Parkinsons and had kidney failure". All in a short span of 6 mths? She used to complain about my father and brother treating her worse than a slave. I repeatedly asked her to break away and visit us. She never wanted; who will look after your dad and brother? I asked them to get meals on wheels; after her collapse they found it wise to do so. I asked them to get someone to help her cleaning the house; they still refuse. I got someone to nurse my mother daily after my father refused to pay R26 per day to a nurse. I need a goverment institution to investigate elder abuse as I cannot afford to pay a private organisation to do so. Who can I turn to. I believe my siblings do not want to act against my father in fear of not inheriting. O don't care; my mother means more to me than anything else. I'm desperate! Please help!

Your mother is lucky to have such a caring child as you, and unfortunate to have a husband and son who are so uncaring and so busy using her. WOuldn't the social welfare authorities be prepared to investigate your complaint of elder abuse ? Its right that there is so much emphasis nationally on child abuse, but it should never be allowed, as it has been, to over-shadow the importance of elder abuse. I hope other readers will have ideas on how to intervene, and maybe they may know of other agencies in CT which could help. Maybe POWA in that area would be able to advise ?
