Mothers
Would no mother be better than a bad mother?

My old friend, the wise late John Bowlby, who studied this a great deal, spoke of the Good Enough Mother --- emphasizing that there was a minimum standard below which problems could arise from inadequate mothering, but that all a child needed to develope well was a mom who was good enough --- saintly and marvellous moms are a bonus, but not essetnial.
