Nobody BECOMES a psychopath --- they are born with a sociopathic personality disorder, just as we are born with a different sort of personality. Some situations may encourage them to act out their disorder and not to try to control it ; other situations may encourage them to be more cautious. This is the same as the AntiSocial Personality quoted in Anika's horrible example. It is typical that they feel no remorse for whatever they did.
Excellent illustration, from a young psychopath I was trying to treat in London some years back. One day he was late for an appointment. He explained that he usually came by bicycle, but that when he went to get on his bike at the station where he kept it, he found someone had cut the chain that secured it, and stolen it. He raged with anger over this awful and thoughtless thief, and also showed great pity for himself at this trerrible loss and inconvenience. I asked how he had managed to get to the hospital at all.
He smiled. "Oh", he said ---I just stole someone else's bike and rode here." I pointed out the contradiction --- didn't he think that right now somebody else was feeling just as angry and sad, at the loss of THEIR bicycle ? He looked puzzled, as if he couldn't understand what I was saying, and explained it to be patiently. "Look", he said" there's nothing wrong --- one of them took my bike, so I just took one of theirs !"
Simple. two teams in the world --- him, and Them. And while he had enormous sympathy and concern for Him, he had none at all for Them. He couldn't see that any of THem could have the same feelings or rights as him.
