What is the purpose of Psychometric testing when you go for a job interview. What weaknesses are they looking for?

I think some of the Psychometric testing that gets done within companies is close to quackery, promising to answer questions that actually can't be answered accurately, using the methods they used.
That psychometric testing CAN often do to a useful exent is this --- it can estimate your general levels of intelligence, and spcific types of thinking skills, and whether they might be best matched to one or another specific type of job ; and they can estimate the range of your job interests ( for instance, whether you're happiest working with other people, or working alone ) and again, match these with what a particular job needs.
Personality testing is usually unreliable in this context and I'm not convinced that in general it helps match the rightguy to the right job.
