should i tell my parents about depression and therapy?
Hello cybershrink
i live with my parents even though i started working recently. anyway i haven't told them about the depression and meds. once my father was telling me that psychologists are chancers and i just don't think they would understand.
once my pschiatrist told me that i should not expect people to understand my depression and he was right because people say insensitive things all the time and the place where it is the worst is work. one guy keeps laughing at me, but i know that its because he is ignorant. anyway should i tell my parents? they are very old fashinoed they will think its insane to take pills for problems.
also i have been going for therapy and it helps but i wonder if it will really make a difference?

Hello sunflower !
Yes, other people can be stunningly insensitive and crude, mainly because they themselves are scared of such illnesses and of needing such treatment themselves. it sounds as if your treament, medicine-wise and in therapy, will surely help you greatly, and as you're of an age to work, its really nobody else's business.
We can't guess how your parents might respond to being told. If they think it's poinless, then ignore their ignorance ; but they might be more understanding and helpful than you expect. And its only by many of us confronting such ignorant attitudes, that we are starting to change it.
