To shy with his folks
I've been going out with my bf for 10 months now, and apparently i'm still too shy with his parents. Thing is, I still dunno how to take them, cuz they can be so moody! Plus sometimes I just feel a bit like an outcast, cuz i'm English, and they're all Afrikaans. They speak English to me, but often it feels like im inconveniencing them. My bf only speaks English to me (he conciders himself to be English).I dunno how to overcome the shyness and be more straight and open with them, without possibly offending them.

Dear Fighter,
Relax. Some thoughts --- why not learn Afrikaans, so you can chose between two languages in which to talk with them ( and, understanding more of what they might say to each other in Afrikaans, you can reassure yourself they're still being friendly ! Are you shy with other people, too ? (Cousnelling can help that ) or is it just these folks ? Generalloy, we love it when someon else takes the trouble to try to talk to us in our own language, even if they do it badly, it's endearing. Stepmom may be a bit moody with everyone --- don't assume it must be about you.
