Work problems
Hi there

I know this is not a serious problem but I its starting to affect my future and my life. I am working as temp since finishing my degree, trying to get as much experience as possible in the industry I want to go in becauce I cant find permanent work.

I love the industry. I have a passion for my work and believe I will do anything to get where I want to be from sweeping floors etc. But every single company I work for treat me like I am a worthless peace of trash. I have talked to other people starting out and it seems I am not the only one. Every one has the attitude of , you should be so thankfull that I give you this job becuase we know how hard it is to find work that, I can treat you any way I want to.

I have never been treated with this much disrespect in my life. Despite the way people talk to you,I have to give up my free time, with out being paid to run personal errands. I work my but of and for what nothing.

Its became so bad that I am starting to become people shy. I am filled with hate and don't even want to go to a inteview because it's just another oppertunity to be treated like crap. I am hoping that some one can say something positive to make me get me attitude and enthusiasm back. I can't say anything back because then they just say if you don't do it we will find some one that's willing to kiss our butts because they are greatfull for the job. Sorry for the long letter but I am so mad at this point I will through my future away and just be a waitress.

Hi Sam,
If it's bothering you, it's at least a significant problem.
yes, isn't it truly pathetic how many petty and trivial litle people choose to get their jollies by putting other people down ? I know how you feel, as in my day ( I think it has improved a bit since then ) junior doctors were treated like dirt on a very routine basis. WhenI started out, I worked not only a 7 to 7 pm day, but every second night worked through the night, and every second weekend, as well. The BBC once decided to make a TV program about our life, and had to give up because the camera crew refused to work enough hours to follow us about ! And our Consultants would expect us to do whatever they wanted, from fetching their dry-cleaning, to washing and polishing their cars. And then people talk about the good old days...
I think one could adapt, to include bosses, the great quote that says that Politicians are like Nappies -- they need to be changed frequently, and for exactly the same reason.
As Dude, says, keep your positive atitude towards yourself. You know who you are, you know you're great, and that you will succeed, and you'll get to a senior position while most of these mailgnant pygmies will still be much where they are, and still looking for someone more vulnerable who they can bully.
But promise yourself one thing --- don't do what most of them are doing --- they decided that as soon as they got the chance, they would do unto others as had been done to them. Instead, resolve that when you get there, and you will, you will NOT imitate them, and you will treat your juniors the way you deserved to be treated.
The arrogance of so many of those who have a job by sheer luck rather than any noticeable skill, is obscene ; as is their exploiting the tight job market by trying to force people to put up with mistreatment hrough fear of unemployment. As Dude says, it's actually more difficult for them to get rid of you, now, and even trying to push you to resign by making things unpleasant in the job, is illegal ; so if they ever turn really nasty, turn the full force of the labour law against them.
YOur hard work WILL pay off, it's just not always easy to believe that while we're being bullied at the bottom.
