Dog ruining carpets!
Cybervet, I am at wits end. I have a Miniature Pincher (female) and she is actually a wonderful little dog. She is well behaved and very obedient, but she soils the carpet every night! If I smack her, she stops for about 3 days, but then it starts again. I have washed the carpets where she soils, over a 100 times, but nothing seems to work. Is my dog trying to send me a message, or must I beat her to death? I have tried everything! I see little of her as it is and when I have to smack her before I go to work every morning, it's harder on me than it is on her! Please help me. I don't want to loose my dog!

Hi Kitty
Is your dog's life worth less than your carpet? I know (hope) you weren't being serious, but you need to understand why she is doing this rather than trying to punish her out of it. She is giving you a message of some sort and it is only when the fear of being smacked wears off that she feels she needs to start the cycle again. She may be doing it because she is suffering from separation anxiety and loneliness. Dogs are social animals and need company most of the day - either human or other pet. She may be bored - not enough walks and toys to chew. I don't know enough about your situation to help more, but perhaps you should consult a reputable animal behaviourist to find out the cause and once you know that you can work on a proper program to solve the problem. In the meantime I strongly advise you not to punish her, but totally ignore her "mishaps" and clean up when she is not around to see. Perhaps cover your carpet with plastic sheeting and newspaper at night, so cleaning is easier. Try meeting all her needs and encouraging acceptable behaviour in an exciting playful way.
