Dwarf Bunny itchy ears and face - think ear mites
Good Evening Doctor,

Please help! My dwarf bunny Twirley is scratching his ears badly and his face. I have been going through my books and it sound like ear mite (ear mange or ear canker). Can you please tel me what to use to fix the problem. Our vet is in Pretoria and we are in Warmbaths, the vet here doesn't know anything about bunnies so I would like your help please.

Thanking you

This could very well be mites. Treating with one of the avermectins (Moxidectin or ivermectin) is usually effective, but the treatment needs to be repeated for 3 times at 10 day intervals to break the life cycle. Clean the environment well. Please do not dip your rabbit with products intended for use in dogs or cats. Frontline has also been associated with mortalities in some rabbits, so try to stay away from these products. You should be able to get your vet in Warmbaths to give this injection - if he is not sure of the dose he is welcome to phone the Onderstepoort veterinary faculty for further instructions.
