Lady the German Shepherd
Same owner, she went to have her ears looked at this week also because of severe itching, end she is very sensitive when I try to rub her ears. my Vet checked it ou under sedation, and said he has no idea what is gonig on, he took black stuff out of her ear canal and sent it to a lab for testing, so Ill get the results later, but I worry, she is still only 2 years old and Im scared that I have neglected her. All my dogs love playing with water sprayers without end, could that perhaps cause the problems

German Shepherd dogs often have ear problems, sometimes because they have a problem with the immunity on their skin. It may also be as result of food allergy, a very common cause of chronic ear infection. Feeding a strict diet of a commercial hypoallergenic diet (available from your veterinarian) can help resolve the problem if food allergy is present. There are no specific tests for food allergy, therefore introduction of a hypoallergenic diet is usually done on a trial basis. Black goo in the ear is very often an indication of a yeast overgrowth, called Malassezia. This may also follow on food allergies. There are very effective ear drops available to treat this problem.
