Orphan Kitty living with me
I found a stray kitten and I think she is about 6 weeks. I have kept her and am really loving her but I have 5 kids (under the age of 5) living with me this month and I have to lock her in my bedroom for fear of them sqeezing her. I havn't taken her to the vet as I have to wait until month end. Is this acceptable as I have never had cats in my life and actually slightly allergic

Hi Kelsey
The sooner you get your kitten to the vet the better as it may be sick, especially if it was a stray. It probably has worms and has not been fed well, so these things need to be dealt with, as well as the vaccinations. Perhaps your vet will allow you to pay him/her off later if you go now. If she is locked in your bedroom then make sure she has a litter tray and water at all times and that you feed her at least 3 small meals of kitten pellets with warm water per day. She will soon be old enough to fend off the children, but for now you need to allow one child to hold her at a time, while you supervise. If you have some sort of cage, you could put her in it for a few minutes at a time during the day where the children are, so they all get used to each other. If you are slightly allergic to cats I would suggest you don't allow her on your bed, especially at night. Give her a nice warm bed in a box and cover your bed with plastic sheeting or bubble wrap during the day. Vacuum the carpets regularly and change your bedding often. Try putting a bit of vaseline in your nostrils every morning and evening - this helps to prevent the cat hairs from going up your nose.
